Sustainable development
There is a critical need to make London into a more sustainable capital, across both public and private sector organisations. Harnessing environmental, economic and social opportunities to achieve this goal is already yielding impressive results. But there is so much more we can do.
By 2016, it is envisaged that London will be a city that makes efficient use of finite resources and energy, and realises the scope for the development of green industries.
The government's sustainable development strategy - Securing the Future, recognises the importance of sustainable consumption and has set the challenge for the UK to become a leader by 2009.
The UK principles of sustainable development are:
- living within environmental limits
- achieving a sustainable economy
- using sound science responsibly
- promoting good governance
