Implement office recycling

There are simple, easy steps you can take to implement an easy office recycling scheme.

It's a two-step process of sourcing containers to store the recyclable materials and then arranging for a regular collection.

Nearly everything in the workplace can be recycled including paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, glass, aluminium, steel cans and printer cartridges. Used CDs, batteries and cartons can also be recycled through separate contracts.

Get your staff involved

The success of office recycling is dependant on getting your staff to participate. You can encourage staff to get involved through clear, consistent and regular communication.

Ensure staff are aware of procedures including what can and cannot be placed in the recycling bins. Do presentations at staff meetings, post instructions and updates on the intranet and send updates on company wide emails. Staff induction packs should include information on your recycling scheme to avoid confusion amongst new starters.

High levels of contamination, that is the wrong materials being placed in the wrong bins, can usually be attributed to a lack of information. Other challenges include recyclable materials being put in the general waste bin and packaging waste not being washed before recycling.

An environmental working group is an efficient way of disseminating information. Members of the working group can help implement procedures on the ground and feed back what is working, and what is not.

On a practical level, locate recycling bins as close to the source of waste as possible: place paper recycling bins next to printers and photocopiers and food packaging bins in the kitchen. Clearly label bins with text and images showing what can and cannot be placed in each one.

Removing or reducing the number of rubbish bins by the side of desks is an effective way to encourage good recycling behaviour. An office wormery is the ideal way of disposing of organic lunchtime waste, which can be turned into compost and used to fertilise office plants.
